Last night Sam and I went to see George Michael in concert here in Fort Lauderdale, the last US stop on his tour.

Our tickets said there would be no warm up act and that the show would start at "8pm prompt".

He took the stage at 8:50pm. It seems he was a bit "under the weather" though why that should delay the show (rather than make him want to get it over with) I'm not sure. BankAtlantic center was not sold out for the Sunday night show.

While his showmanship was good, his energy was clearly lacking. There were times that he held the mic out toward the crowd to sing the lyrics rather than doing them himself, and I had to wonder if he was running out of breath or knew he couldn't hit some particular note.

While I didn't track his set list it seemed short, and was definitely shorter than the one reported by JMG at the MSG show in NYC.

We paid good money for prime seating, and I felt he didn't deliver.

Saturday night I called the monthly 1st Saturday contra dance in Boynton Beach. There was a good-sized crowd with several newcomers. The band was Murphy's Law - a father, mother, daughter, son group - and they played wonderfully.

My program, which included several new dances (new for me), went well. I had one major brain fart where I screwed up well into one dance. We had one train wreck, on a dance with a progression that proved difficult for just enough people for it to be a problem. I think I already have a good idea of how to do a better walk through of that dance and I might try it again in the future.

The n00bs seemed to have fun. We had a couple come in an join us on the dance before the break, so I substituted in a simpler dance and got them dancing. I got some nice compliments from some of the regular crowd -- it's always nice to keep them happy too.

I'm calling the same dance next month as well.

We saw The X Files: I want to believe last night...

not central to the plot, there's this brief disclosure that the two bad guys "were married in Massachusetts"* and are presumed to be homosexual lovers. This seemed like stupid gay bashing homophobia to me. It doesn't serve the plot. It's kind of a throw away revelation. Does it somehow make them worse villains? I almost think that GLAAD should get on their case.

oh, and the movie pretty much sucked.

*MA doesn't allow non-resident same sex couples to marry, so unless they lived in MA then and moved, this is an inaccuracy anyway.
